Abstract

Accurate monitoring of infusion flow rate is a crucial aspect of healthcare services to prevent therapeutic errors, such as infusion flow disturbances that may endanger patient safety. Common problems encountered in clinical practice include inaccurate calculation of infusion flow rate (mL/hour), absence of infusion drops, blood backflow into the infusion tubing, and the presence of air bubbles in the line. This study aims to improve the accuracy of peristaltic infusion monitoring by utilizing an optical TCRT5000 sensor integrated with an Internet of Things (IoT) system to support real-time early detection of infusion disturbances. This research employs an experimental method. The infusion monitoring system was designed, implemented, and directly tested using a standard measurement device, namely an Infusion Device Analyzer (IDA). The results show that the TCRT5000 sensor achieved an average accuracy of 94.9% with an average error of 5.1%, indicating that the sensor performance remains within the acceptable tolerance range of ±10%. Furthermore, the integrated prototype successfully transmitted data to an application developed using MIT App Inventor, producing an average latency of less than 1 second, with an error rate of 0.39% and an accuracy of 99.61%. These results demonstrate that the integrated peristaltic infusion monitoring system is capable of accurately detecting infusion disturbances in real time. Implication: The findings indicate that the integration of the TCRT5000 sensor with an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system effectively enhances the accuracy and reliability of real-time peristaltic infusion monitor Ing. This system has the potential to support early detection of infusion-related disturbances, improve patient safety, and serve as an innovative solution for the development of digital-based infusion monitoring technologies in healthcare facilities.
